Wir freuen uns auf ein weiteres Highlight aus Burundi und haben keine Kosten und Mühen gescheut Euch ein weiteres Lot der Gashikanwa Washing Station zu präsentieren. Dieses Lot, welches als NATURAL aufbereitet wurde, erinnert mit seiner süßen Fruchtigkeit an beerige Sahnebonbons. Ein sehr klare Tasse, ausgewogen, mit Noten von spritziger Brombeersäure und Honigsüße. Yummy.
Gashikanwa is named after a small village in Burundi. The Gashikanwa washing station is located in Burundi’s main coffee-growing region, Ngozi, Buyenzi. This region is well known for its high-altitude coffee farms (1.700 and 2.000 m.a.s.l. ), mild temperatures and volcanic soil.
All of the 360 members who supply Gashikanwa are smallholders with about a hundred coffee trees. The main harvest in Burundi runs from March through to the end of July. Cherries are usually harvested by smallholder family members themselves and brought to a washing station.
Farmers from the surrounding hills drop off their cherries at the washing station where they are weighed and sorted by hand. This natural lot is then moved to the raised beds, to dry slowly, with consistent airflow and rotation. To ensure a consistent temperature and humidity, the cherry is covered during rainfall, the high sun, and at night.
This year, quantities were limited, but we were able to get our hands on this precious lot. Still, the coffees we tasted were delicious, and we were excited to pick at least one – this delicious natural from Gashikanwa.
